This project started in 2002 with 3D BluePrint being requested to do a second opinion regarding the redevelopment and expansion of this very popular Dutch museum. At that time the design concept was 25% over budget and in deadlock. Starting from scratch 3D BluePrint was able to bring down that figure to 15% under budget with 4800 m2 more gross floor space (now 13.000 m2 in total) while the total concept retained its ambiance and quality. Last month it was completed on time and within budget.
These incredible results were achieved with 3D Blueprint’s own specific design method (Regiplan®), combined with the modelling power of Allplan from Nemetschek.
The three most important features of this approach are:
A pre-design phase prior to the actual design phase:
Spaces, quality, costs and time were combined into a feasible solution during this phase. The spaces were modelled in Allplan in 3D with all relevant information attached to them. This made it possible to easily calculate the costs based on the square meters Allplan could export (Excel, Access), which resulted in rapid evaluation of different configurations of spaces.
A centralised building information model:
During the design phase 3D BluePrint kept on working entirely in 3D. Extern project participants working 2D could hold on to their way of working though as all 2D drawings could be made available in one project in Allplan. They could then be used as a blueprint for checking the 3D model. This meant that even with reluctant project participants a centralised building information model became reality.
A uniform and guaranteed bill of quantities:
The total Railway Museum was modelled in one Allplan model including all drawings extracted from it. As all elements were coded in one system(Regiplan®), it became possible to extract all spaces and elements from the model and report them so the building and construction company. They could make a prices based on uniform and guaranteed quantities. Besides this, all added functionalities like 4D planning and visualisations were used to inform all participants with great success.
All in all it can be concluded that with the help of Nemetschek software this project has become a huge success and a schoolbook example of the future of AEC industry projects.
About 3D BluePrint Technologies:
3D BluePrint Technologies is an Architect and Project management company that specialises in combining design coordination with centralised Building Information Models (3D / 4D). To support this combination, 3D BluePrint has a standardised project approach (Regiplan method) of which an achievable goal, accompanying design sequence, modelling rules and element-coding are it’s main components.
