Renovation, New Construction and Expansion of the Stuttgart Theater

Since March 2003, the Stuttgart Theater has had a new location: the Rheinstahl-Hallen at the Pragsattel
in Stuttgart. The old, former industrial building from 1923 was expanded through a large-scale construction project. Only those parts of the former industrial building that enjoy historic preservation protection were preserved – the two façades and the steel roof structure. Therefore, it was particularly crucial for this
project to preserve the major elements of the building under historic protection and to integrate them
with future-oriented spatial designs.

plus+ bauplanung GmbH successfully achieved this goal through a harmonic design and a functional occupancy concept. The new Stuttgart theater features four individual theaters of different sizes. Some
of them have seating that can be moved and are designed for flexible use: With its variable number
of seats from 150 to 1,050 in the large hall, the available space has been optimally customized to
meet the requirements of different event formats. A multi-functional hall and gymnasium fully
accentuates the old roof structures and links culture and sports activities.

The designers used Nemetschek’s Allplan software to tackle the project’s construction complexity.
Work on the project proceeded seamlessly in 3D, from drafting to detailed planning. Since all data
was entered consistently in 3D, the planners benefited from the detailed working method and were
able to perfectly integrate all new construction in the existing building part.
