 | Contemporary architecture at Fota Island Resort, Cork, Ireland: Hogan & Associates relies on Nemetschek Allplan 3D software for its latest building design project

Fota Island sits tranquilly in Cork harbour, about 10 kilometres from Cork City. Golf may have been played on the pleasant landscape setting since the late 19th century. In 2004, building developers Fleming Construction Group purchased Fota Island Golf club and the surrounding lands, and laid plans to construct a substantial hotel and residential complex. Hogan & Associates, a Cork based architectural and urban design practice, was given the challenging construction design project - named the Fota Island Resort.
The commission for both architects Hogan & Associates, and the interior designers was to create a tranquil retreat for visitors, with every home comfort catered for, from high grade kitchens and appliances to in-house entertainment systems. Oak floors, luxurious fabrics and furnishings in natural colours will all contribute to the relaxed atmosphere.

Speeding up construction
The project started on site in January 2005 and is due for completion in April 2006. "The construction time of only 16 months constitutes a big challenge for a building complex of this size. Our design team had to deliver high quality plans very fast to ensure compliance with the project plan," Roddy Hogan, senior architect and director of Hogan & Associates remarks. A luxury 125 bedroom hotel with leisure and spa facilities, 287 managed holiday lodges of different sizes, a golf spa and golf course are usually not built in such a short period of time.

However, the fact that a project of this size can be built so quickly is mainly due to the commitment of all companies involved in the design and construction process.
One of the key elements is the fast production of construction drawings by Hogan & Associates using Nemetschek Allplan as a 3D drafting tool. "A unique benefit of Allplan is that it offers the freedom to design without any constraints imposed by the usual CAD packages," explains Ovidiu Suteu, project architect at Hogan & Associates
